DALLAS, TX – The Solarize South Dallas team has developed a pilot solar photovoltaic home that was featured on the DFW Solar Home Tour, hosted by the North Texas Renewable Energy Group (NTREG) on October 7, 2017. The annual tour displays solar installations on homes and businesses around the Metroplex. For the first time, a Sustainability Education Center was organized during the tour for the South Dallas neighborhood at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, located at 2922 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd, Dallas, Texas 75215.
The solar array was installed during the tour as a 2.36 kW system using eight Texas-made Mission Solar Energy 295 W solar panels, manufactured in San Antonio. Mission Solar Energy employs hundreds of employees in Texas and is the only solar panel manufacturing facility in the State. California-based Enphase Energy donated their latest IQ 6, smart grid ready, microinverters to the project. The South Dallas system features some of the latest technology and highest efficiency products on the market.
The Solarize South Dallas team was selected this year to compete in the US Department of Energy’s Solar in Your Community Challenge. The challenge aims to expand solar electricity access to underserved segments such as low-to-moderate-income (LMI) households and nonprofit organizations. As a part of the challenge, the Solarize South Dallas team, led by Dallas-based nonprofit Good Faith Impact, aims to develop 100kW of solar capacity for communities in South Dallas by the end of 2018, through a locally trained workforce.
This past April, fifteen members of the community completed a solar education and safety training session at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. Graduates of the training received hands-on experience through a real-time residential solar installation. Dallas-based solar design company Good Faith Energy donated the project management capacity for the install.
This year, the Solutions Project approved a grant of $10,000 in support of efforts to provide 100% clean energy and climate justice community education through local solar developments in South Dallas. Good Faith Impact, utilized the grant as “seed-funds” for the Solarize South Dallas initiative.
Going forward, the Solarize South Dallas team is working on innovative financing options to promote affordable access to the benefits of solar energy. Financing that promotes shared savings will take the edge-off of homeowners and will create the opportunity for residents to build assets through energy savings.
About Good Faith Impact: Good Faith Impact is a Dallas-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization focused on initiatives related to renewable energy and solar technology resources.
