Austrian doctor sues US for seizing patients' abortion drugs

BOISE, Idaho — An Austrian doctor who prescribes abortion drugs to patients around the world is suing the United States for allegedly blocking her American patients from getting abortions by seizing their prescriptions.

Dr. Rebecca Gomperts filed the lawsuit Monday, asking a judge to stop the Food and Drug Administration from taking any steps that would prevent her patients from accessing the abortion-inducing drugs.

In the lawsuit, Gomperts says many women in the U.S. can only obtain medication-induced abortions through the internet because they live too far away from regional providers or lack have the money or ability to travel. She contends that by seizing the drugs, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and other officials are denying her patients their constitutionally protected right to terminate their pregnancies.

The FDA requires doctors in the United States to be certified by the U.S. distributor of the abortion drugs before they can prescribe them.
