Sound familiar? Burger King launches quarter pound burger

Jan 18, 2018

NEW YORK — Burger King is looking to start a beef with McDonald's. The chain says the Double Quarter Pound King, its own version of McDonald's quarter-pound burger, will hit restaurants Thursday. An ad shows Burger King's mascot at a funeral for a competitor's burger, but doesn't mention McDonald's by name. It comes as McDonald's is working to swap out frozen beef patties for fresh ones in its Quarter Pounder. Burger King says it uses frozen patties. The chain has thrown fire at rivals before: Last year, Burger King sold spicy nuggets after Wendy's stopped offering a similar snack. Burger...

Migrants shift to old, risky route to Spain and Europe

Jan 18, 2018

MADRID — Stronger border controls in Turkey and Libya, together with instability in northern Morocco, are pushing record numbers of migrants and asylum-seekers to attempt a hazardous western Mediterranean Sea passage from North Africa to Europe. The International Organization for Migration says 22,100 people washed up on Spanish shores in boats or were rescued off the country's coast in 2017. Their numbers increased sharply during the last three months of year, worrying observers about what's to come. The trend comes as Libya and Turkey have worked to stop migrants from departing for Europe. The controls helped reduce the number of...

Canada's female coach chasing 5th straight Olympic gold

Jan 18, 2018

Laura Schuler always wanted to coach hockey. A member of Canada's first women's national team, she just never thought she would get the chance to coach her nation's team on the world's biggest stage. She was wrong. Schuler is the first former national team player to coach the Canadian women. On a one-year break from her job coaching Dartmouth, Schuler will try to lead Canada to a fifth straight Olympic gold medal next month in South Korea. Not bad for someone who didn't see many role models when playing for Canada's first Olympic team in 1998. "It just was never...

US home construction tumbled 8.2 percent in December

Jan 18, 2018

WASHINGTON — Groundbreakings on new homes fell 8.2 percent in December, with builders ending 2017 by slowing down their construction of single-family houses. The Commerce Department said Thursday that the monthly decline put U.S. housing starts at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.19 million units. Almost all of the decrease came from builders beginning work on fewer single-family houses, a reversal from the robust gains reported in October and November. Despite the monthly decline, housing starts in 2017 were their strongest in a decade. But the ramp up in construction has done little to offset the dwindling pool of...

The Latest: Trump not want CHIP in short-term budget deal

Jan 18, 2018

WASHINGTON — The Latest on the debate over immigration and the budget (all times local): 9:45 a.m. President Donald Trump says a children's health insurance program shouldn't be part of a short-term budget deal. Trump favors making the program part of "a long term solution, not a 30 Day, or short term, extension!" Trump is referring to the Children's Health Insurance Program, also known as CHIP House Republican leaders have included a six-year renewal in a short-term budget bill in an effort to woo Democrats. But the effort faces resistance from Democrats who've been demanding protections for certain young immigrants....
