BRUSSELS — The Latest on Brexit (all times local): 12:55 p.m. Wholesale florists at London's new Covent Garden Market say the delay to Britain's planned March 29 departure from the European Union is adding to business uncertainty. Dean Porter of Deanos Flowers says "I think it's a joke and I just want us to get on with it and get out. I've had enough of it." He says he prefers Britain leave the EU bloc without an agreed withdrawal deal. He says "we voted to leave." Italian move to join China's Belt and Road coup for Beijing

Mar 22, 2019

BEIJING — Despite criticisms, Beijing has been steadily gathering support for its "Belt and Road" initiative, which aims to weave a network of ports, bridges and power plants linking China with Africa, Europe and beyond. Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte has pledged to sign a memorandum of understanding this week on supporting the initiative during a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping, who has made it a signature policy of his administration. Italy's involvement would give China a crucial inroad into western Europe and a symbolic boost in its economic tug-of-war with the United States. Italy would be the first member...

Pompeo in Lebanon to talk Hezbollah amid Golan condemnation

Mar 22, 2019

BEIRUT — U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo held talks with Lebanese leaders on Friday amid strong regional condemnation of President Donald Trump's declaration that it's time the U.S. recognized Israel's sovereignty over the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. The abrupt pronouncement was likely to cloud Pompeo's two-day visit during which he is to meet with top officials, including some who are aligned with the Iran- and Syria-allied militant Hezbollah group. The visit is the last leg of a Mideast tour that took Pompeo to Kuwait and Israel, where he lauded warm ties with Israel, met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu...

Mar 22, 2019

ISTANBUL — New Zealand's deputy prime minister said the gunman accused of killing 50 people in two mosques in the South Pacific nation would spend the rest of his life in isolation in prison and called for solidarity to eradicate "hate-filled ideologies." Winston Peters was speaking at an emergency session of the 57-member Organization of Islamic Cooperation's executive committee called by Turkey to combat prejudice against Muslims in the wake of the attack. Peters' attendance comes amid controversy sparked by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who, at election campaign rallies, has been screening video clips of the attack, despite efforts...

UTRECHT, Netherlands — An investigating judge has extended by two weeks the detention of a man suspected of killing three passengers on a tram in the central Dutch city of Utrecht and seriously wounding three more.
