Trump's payment explanations shift as legal exposure grows

Dec 13, 2018

NEW YORK — The sentencing of Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's former personal lawyer, brought a perilous investigation into the president's campaign one step closer to the Oval Office. Though Cohen broke down during his sentencing hearing Wednesday, Trump remained uncharacteristically quiet, his Twitter feed still while he ignored shouted questions about his former attorney at a White House event. But Trump has been far from silent during the monthslong Cohen saga, with the president's explanations frequently shifting as his legal exposure grew. Since the spring, Trump has gone from denying knowledge of any payments to women who claim to...

Pledge to limit tenure as speaker wins over Pelosi critics

Dec 13, 2018

WASHINGTON — Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi appears to have sealed her return as House speaker when the new Congress convenes next month. The California Democrat won over several rebellious Democrats on Wednesday by agreeing to limit her tenure to no more than four years. That pledge immediately drew the support of seven of her critics. Not only will Pelosi be second in line to the presidency as House speaker, she will be the government's highest-ranking Democrat and assume a leading role in confronting President Donald Trump for the second half of his term. The question of whether Pelosi would be elected...

The militants also stole or destroyed pumps, cables, generators, transformers and vital electricity lines. Amnesty called on the Iraqi government to repair rural infrastructure and compensate the displaced so they can return to their homes. IS seized control of much of northern Iraq in...

Dec 13, 2018

FATUKOKO, Indonesia — The stranger showed up at the girl's door one night with a tantalizing job offer: Give up your world, and I will give you a future. It was a chance for 16-year-old Marselina Neonbota to leave her isolated village in one of the poorest parts of Indonesia for neighboring Malaysia, where some migrant workers can earn more in a few years than in a lifetime at home. A way out for a girl so hungry for a life beyond subsistence farming that she walked 22 kilometers (14 miles) every day to the schoolhouse and back. She grabbed...
