Activist Lewis honored decades after civil rights arrest

Feb 23, 2018

JACKSON, Miss. — The first time John Lewis traveled to Mississippi in 1961, he was arrested and jailed with other Freedom Riders, black and white, who challenged segregation in a bus station. Lewis, who is African-American, remembers going into a restroom labeled for white men only. A Jackson police officer told him and other young people in the group to leave. They refused. "The next words he said: 'You're under arrest.' And that was my introduction to the state of Mississippi and the city of Jackson," Lewis told The Associated Press on Thursday in a phone interview from Atlanta. After...

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea — The Latest on the Pyeongchang Olympics (all times local): 1:10 p.m. The Americans secured their worst showing in modern-era Olympic women's figure skating with Mirai Nagasu failing to get any lift on her triple axel and popping a triple lutz. The 24-year-old Nagasu was fourth at the 2010 Vancouver Games but never got going in the individual competition at the Pyeongchang Games after helping the U.S. win a team bronze. She hit her triple axel in that event, becoming the first American woman and third overall to do so in an Olympics. But she slipped below...

ST. LOUIS — A St. Louis grand jury on Thursday indicted Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens on a felony invasion of privacy charge for allegedly taking a compromising photo of a woman with whom he had an affair in 2015. The Republican governor responded that he made a mistake but committed no crime. St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner launched an investigation in January after Greitens admitted to an affair with his St. Louis hairdresser that began in March 2015. He was elected governor in November 2016. Thursday's indictment was followed with an announcement by House Republican leaders that they were...

Glitches or not, Nissan starts testing semi-autonomous rides

Feb 23, 2018

YOKOHAMA, Japan — Starting next month, Nissan Motor Co. is testing on regular roads what it calls "a robo-vehicle mobility service." Called Easy Ride, it uses a cell-phone app to book semi-autonomous driven rides. But Easy Ride won't necessarily be easy if poor internet connections mean it won't work at all. Nissan says that feedback from the 300 people who have signed up to try out Easy Ride will be used to fine-tune the app. The Japanese automaker hopes to roll it out as a commercial service in the early 2020s. Details, including pricing, are undecided. The service was developed...

The Latest: Greitens legal team seeks indictment dismissal

Feb 23, 2018

ST. LOUIS — The Latest on a grand jury indictment of Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens (all times local): 10 p.m. A spokeswoman for St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner says that despite "personal attacks" by Gov. Eric Greitens, the appropriate place to consider a criminal charge against him is the courtroom, not the media. Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner on Thursday announced that a city grand jury indicted the Republican governor on one count of felony invasion of privacy. The charge stems from an affair Greitens had with his St. Louis hairdresser in 2015, before he became governor. The indictment alleges...
